Carl XVI Gustaf succeeded his grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf as king on 15 September 1973.
He has reigned longer than any other monarch in Swedish history. The King's motto, "For Sweden – With the Times", reflects a desire to meet the demands placed by society on a modern monarch today.

Silvia Sommerlath married King Carl XVI Gustaf in 1976 and became Queen of Sweden. The Queen is deeply committed to humanitarian issues, not least in areas such as the vulnerability of children and caring for dementia sufferers.
