TEKLA BERGMAN FRÖBERG
Born 1994
"Ever since I was little, I have been obsessed with drawing – a vital element of understanding myself and life. Salvation, arisen from collapse. Beings in transformation, living in my head, taking shape on paper, an esoteric diary. Birth. Inception. Having become a mum to two children in the last two years, time has become different. Balancing art with life isn’t easy. Being a mum is a double-edged sword. It’s wonderful, but it’s exhausting. Childbirth is something that still feels completely unreal and incomprehensible. The sequence of events follows and plays in my thoughts day and night. Through my drawings, I also try to process what really happened, to get closer to the event, and to emerge on the other side – still in one piece.
Almost all my recent drawings have been done while cradling a sleeping baby. A child in one arm, and a pencil in my other hand. My drawings are born out of my hands. Out of necessity.."
Master’s degree in fine art, 2021, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts
THE SELECTION COMMITTEE'S MOTIVATION:
Using drawing as a tool, Tekla Bergman Fröberg explores motherhood, childbirth and the mother–child relationship. In the field of tension between animation and drawing, cut-out dolls move in unexpected ways, describing both a playfulness and a dependence. The result is multi-layered – perhaps demanding, but also suggestive and intriguing.
