“In spring 2015, I saw an exhibition of works by Paula Modersohn-Becker at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. My fascination with drawing started right then and there. I remember how amazed I was by her naive style, and how the way she drew was so different from what I had been taught. She uses contrasts between light and dark, and very simple forms. Not like most drawing today with lots of detail, but equally as effective.
I fell in love with Paula’s way of drawing, as well as Helene Schjerfbeck’s.
I was studying at Idun Lovén Art School in Stockholm at the time and started to make sculptures using the old way of drawing. The results were minimalistic, and my entire imagery soon became simplifications of reality. […]
These days, I draw digitally on a computer. It is convenient and accessible, but not technically easier. […]
Drawing helps me to understand what I am working with, a kind of documentation of experiences, like a visual diary.[…] So thank you Paula, and thank you Helene for leading me back to the traditional way of drawing that I am now making my own.”
Ingrid is studying a Bachelor’s programme at the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts (Umeå Konsthögskola) and will graduate in 2020. She also studied at Idun Lovén Art School (Konstskolan Idun Lovén) and Edsvik Art School (Edsviks Konstskola), both in Stockholm.
